Mobile Web Sites - Two Ways To Do It

Broadly speaking there are two ways you can go to get on the mobile web effectively and this will largely depend on how compatible your current web site is (check your web site compatibility with W3C mobileOK Checker).

Option 1: Mobile Device Friendly Web Sites:

The mobile web is exploding - where are you?

Mobile web sites

Is your business ready to capitalise on the massive growth of the mobile web?

Does your business have a mobile web site or is your business web site at least mobile device friendly?

If not, your business will lose out on the opportunities the mobile internet has to offer.

Side note: Some Stats

  • The growth in internet enabled mobile devices, smart phones and mobile data traffic is nothing short of phenomenal. Data traffic is growing in excess of 100% per annum worldwide and India, South Africa, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia are seeing the fastest growth in Mobile Internet usage.
  • The Middle East and Africa will have the strongest growth of any region at 133 percent CAGR, followed by Asia Pacific at 119 percent and North America at 117 percent
  • South Africa has in excess of 40 million registered cellphone users (compared to 6.5 million registered internet users) and the number of users that do not use desktop access (PC's) but mobile only access is expected to exceed 16 million by 2012.
  • Globally, mobile data traffic will double every year through 2014, increasing 39 times between 2009 and 2014.

If your business already has a web site it might be relatively easy to make it mobile device friendly (enable it to be viewed easily on mobile phones). This will depend on how your site was designed, but more about that here. For the moment, check your web site to see how compatible it is with mobile devices by testing it with W3C mobileOK Checker.

Extend your marketing reach!

Mobile web sitesA mobile web site extends the marketing capabilities of your business to over 40 Million cellphone users in South Africa.

Just like a web address (and web site) allows you to provide Internet users with information easily and dynamically, a mobile address allows cellphone users to access your company information and services using their cellphones.

In the South African environment this means that you extend your marketing capability to over 40 million users (compared to about 6.5 million registered Internet users).

Added to this, cellphone users can access your information from anywhere with even a basic cellphone - no computers needed, nor are latest model cellphones needed.

A mobile address is ideal for:

  • businesses that already have a web site and wish to extend their m-commerce capabilities
  • businesses that cater primarily to a local market
  • businesses that cater to a market with limited or no Internet access
  • businesses that offer products or services with a low monetary value and where the Internet may not provide sufficient exposure
  • businesses that need to communicate in languages other than Afrikaans or English
  • businesses that themselves have limited access to the Internet
